Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure is part of Hexagon, a leading global provider of information technologies that drive productivity and quality across enterprise applications. The company has more than 16,000 employees in 46 countries. Bryan Layton, Technical Director at Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure, oversees development, QA and support services. Layton is focused on making the job of software development and QA easier. This can be challenging as Hexagon uses a wide range of software tools, including JIRA, Confluence, SharePoint, Aha!, TFS, HP Quality Center and more.
Moving Away From HP Quality Center
One area where Layton saw room for improvement was in software testing. “Our current testing solution wasn’t fully meeting our needs, so we were ready to make a change,” said Layton. “We looked for a less-expensive solution with a robust product roadmap that matched our future direction in an agile DevOps environment.”
“There have been significant efficiency gains since we made the switch. qTest is just easier to use than Quality Center, and that saves us valuable time.”

Evaluating Test Case Management Tools
Layton and his team did an extensive 12-month evaluation of 10 different software testing tools. After several rounds of evaluation, the team narrowed it down to qTest, Microsoft Test Manager, QMetry and Zephyr. In the end, it came down to either moving to qTest or staying with Quality Center. Layton’s team decided to make the move to qTest.
Realizing Significant Efficiency Gains
Moving to qTest proved to be a good decision for Layton and his team. “We’ve been very happy,” said Layton. “There have been significant efficiency gains since we made the switch. qTest is just easier to use than Quality Center, and that saves us valuable time.”
In addition to the time savings, Layton notes that qTest has helped improve collaboration across his global team. “We bought licenses for the whole team – testers, developers and business analysts. qTest is helping everyone collaborate better. The test cases have become the central object used to make sure we are delivering high-quality software.”
Layton also likes the way QASymphony frequently releases software. “With qTest, there are always new features coming out that make the product even better,” said Layton. “And the roadmap for the future is very exciting.”
